What type of Window Treatments Offer the Most Privacy?

Raleigh privacy shutters

Your home is your sanctuary, and if you think like the majority of homeowners, getting window treatments in Raleigh that offer privacy and noise blocking to maintain your castle is important. Any window covering is better than an uncovered window. Yet there are some window treatments that add more privacy than others, especially on nontraditional windows.

Providing Privacy on Specialty Windows

All of the large, rectangular windows in your house are easy to cover with almost any window treatment like Raleigh shutters, drapes, or blinds|.

However, there are some situations when you need a specific type of window treatment to get the privacy you want. These could be:

  • Windows in the bathroom where water and humidity may ruin fabric window treatments.

  • Entryway sidelights that are tall and skinny on which window treatments can be pushed around when the door opens or shuts.

  • Non-square windows such as transoms, circular windows, bay windows, etc., where typical rectangular blinds and drapes can’t cover your window without sacrificing the beauty of the window’s unique shape.

  • Big windows that are difficult to reach such as second-story foyer windows.

In these instances, you’ll need window treatments that go above and beyond to provide privacy to your space.

As a bonus, look for window treatments that offer good sound control to keep outside noises outside and prevent neighbors from overhearing.

The Best Window Treatments for Privacy

The most privacy-friendly window treatment we recommend are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to fully close, for when blocking all the light and sound you can is what you need. If you want to let light in and see outside, just give the louvers a tilt. For taller windows, you should position the louvers at an angle to let light in while still keeping your privacy.

Indoor shutters are also perfect for non-rectangular windows because they can be customized to fit any shape or size. And since Polywood shutters are waterproof, they’re an excellent choice for bathrooms.

Another window treatment that helps with privacy is roller shades. Roller shades take up very little space above the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent any views from outside your home. While they can’t be custom-made to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes made from water resistant material for areas like your bathrooms.

Window Treatments that Don’t Make the Cut for Privacy

While any window covering offers a basic level of privacy, there are two that might not get the job done. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains were popular years ago and can add a a breezy feeling to a room. Yet they’re fairly translucent and can be seen through fairly easily, particularly at night.

Another window covering that isn’t great for privacy are cheap or heavy blinds, which can break and/or get stuck at a certain angle. If you can’t close the blinds all the way because of breakage, then they’re not providing much privacy at all.
