Exposing More Plantation Shutter Myths10/10/2017Blake Jarman Our Raleigh shutter team has exposed a few shutter myths before. During our last myth-debunking binge, we exposed a few common misconceptions homeowners have about interior shutters in Raleigh. Well, the Sunburst Shutters Raleigh experts are back to set the record straight on a couple more myths we’ve been hearing from people in and around North Carolina. Let’s take a look. Myth #1: “Plantation shutters only look good in Southern houses.” When some homeowners hear the term “plantation shutters,” their minds immediately go to the image of a giant, elegant southern house surrounded by hills. Though it’s true that they owe their name to that location and time, plantation shutters in fact had huge popularity way before and way after the Antebellum South. Plantation shutters probably picked up that name because they were so ubiquitous in southern homes at the time. Because of their immense popularity in the south–due to their ability to keep homes cool during hot summers, as well as offering fantastic views for those huge houses–the name just stuck. Nevertheless, plantation shutters offer those very same benefits to any home, no matter its style or location. Craftsman homes can use shutters, just as Tudor homes, Mid-Century Modern houses, and even cottage houses can. Myth #2: “My house‘s style won’t work with shutters.” Because plantation shutters saw so much use over time, some people may have gotten the impression that shutters may seem somewhat stale. We’ve heard a customer say before that their space was “too eclectic” to install shutters, which was a big head-scratcher–since shutters are just about the only window treatment that can accentuate any style. Interior shutters are adaptable to any type of design, from modern lounge to fun man cave. And don’t forget, there’s a reason shutters are still chosen all these years later: they’re always in style. Get a set of the latest and most fashionable drapes and they’ll look out of fashion in 18 months. Shutters stay bright, bold and beautiful for years and years, especially when you install premier Polywood plantation shutters. Myth #3: “Shutters and blinds are just about the same.” For some reason, there seems to be some confusion over the difference between shutters and blinds. It might have to do with people confusing “slats” and “louvers,” or maybe there’s confusion because of their somewhat similar shapes. No matter the reason, blinds and shutters couldn’t be more different. Below is a basic breakdown of the two. What’s the difference? Blinds Shutters Are able to block out whole window134 No Yes Structure Hangs from cord Solid frame attached136 to window jamb How long will they last? Usually wear down or deteriorate after 2-3 years. Can easily last 20+ years. Permanent or temporary? Temporary Permanent Increases home value No Yes Energy Efficiency Minimal Can block up to 50% of heat from the sun. Specialty Windows Can only fit rectangular windows. Can fit any specialty shape windows. What are the horizontal parts called? Slats Louvers Myth #4: “All window coverings offer nearly the same energy efficiency.” As the “Blinds vs. Shutters” table shows, window treatments can vary tremendously on how energy efficient they are. The shape, material, and finish can all make a difference in how much energy efficiency a window treatment offers. Offering no benefits in energy efficiency is a bare window without a covering. Offering just a tad more energy efficiency are your typical off the shelf mini blinds. More energy efficient than those are drapes and heavier fabric window treatments. Getting even closer to energy efficient territory we have typical wood shutters and honeycomb shades, made to offer sun-blocking protection and heat reduction. But dwarfing all of these other window treatments are Polywood plantation shutters, built to both reflect and block heat from the sun from passing into your home.
